Elly PetersonElly Peterson was born on June 5th 1914 and is from Charlotte. She chose to take on the career path of a politician, which was rare for women at the time. She did many thing in her career as a politician. She was vice chairman of the Republican party at age 47 from 1961 to 1963. In 1964 she was asked by Governor George W. Romney to run for senate, but did not win the position. However, in 1965 she became the first woman to be Chairman of the Republican Party. Along with these career achievements, she also was a Volunteer of the Red Cross in WWII and got into the Hall of Fame. She was also very influential in Charlotte, including things like encouraging the youth to participate in city affairs and answered questions for the youth. |
