History
The Fitch H. Beach Airport started with the Charlotte Flying Club, organized in 1939 by Cecil Bosworth and Claude Cooper, whom were local pilots. The club consisted of 20 members who wanted to learn how to fly. Stanley McWhinney, a flight instructor, was hired to teach the club's members, but he needed a licensed field to teach them. Cecil Bosworth and Bill Powers, another club member, borrowed a small road grader from the Road Commission and made a smooth runway on the Roy Demuth farm. Paul Gay, a club member and solo pilot, approached Fitch Beech about the need for a Charlotte air field. Mr. Beech agreed to give the city money for the property, now known as Fitch H. Beech Airport. In 1943, the airport started to grow with the start of T-hangers.
