The Eaton County Jail
On June 8th, 1840, Edmund B. Bostwick acquired a warranty deed for an acre of land located where Charlotte's Courthouse Square is today. Bostwick intended for the land to be used for the construction of county government buildings including a jail.
However, in 1842, the Eagle Hotel started service as the county's 1st jail building. The 1st permanent jail building was ready September 1, 1846. Its eastern end contained jail cells and the western end contained the sheriff's residence. A separate cell did exist for women but it was rarely used.
In 1873, a new jail building costing $16000 was constructed. That building can be seen in the photo to the right. In 1961, a new jail and Sheriff's residence was constructed. The new building held about 61 inmates. Twenty nine years later, the current jail building opened. After a recent expansion, it can now hold 366 inmates.
