Mary E. Green Mary E. Green came to Charlotte as a young child with her parents in the early 1850's. As she grew up she decided to follow the medical career path.
She got a medical degree from New York Medical College in 1865 and graduated in 1868 from Women's Medical College in Philadelphia. She became first woman in America to be admitted to the Medical Association. Being a women doctor at this time meant that she had to fight through all the insults and jeers sent her way. She had four children and came back to Charlotte with her family in 1873. Here she built a house and carved all the wood interior. That house with is amazing carvings still stands today and is now the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home. |
