The 1885 Eaton County Courthouse of Charlotte, Michigan
The historic 1885 Eaton County Courthouse is located in Downtown Charlotte. Construction work started in 1883 and the building was completed two years later. Unfortunately, a fire broke out on July 4, 1894 [thought to have been caused by a painter working on the building] that caused damage estimated at close to $40,000. During the fire, the statue of Justice, standing on the top of the bell tower, had collapsed and fell to the basement. Afterward, the building was remodeled to nearly the same specifications. Since the 1990s, Courthouse Square Association has run a museum dedicated to Eaton County History in the building.
